Escalating Arousal in Dogs 🐶⚠️ When a dog's body language shows signs of rising excitement or stress: ➡️ Both dogs have stiff bodies ➡️ The dog on top has a high tail, ears forward, and a direct stare — signaling high arousal or dominance ➡️ The dog underneath appears to struggle, with ears up and a “C-shaped” muzzle — a warning facial expression Healthy, fun play can sometimes include pinning and roughhousing, but it’s all about balance and mutual enjoyment. Look for playful, relaxed signals l

Understanding Arousal Indicators in Dogs This short video shows a progression of arousal indicators in my dog. A tail held high, tight, and moving rapidly is a confident, aroused tail—not necessarily a happy one. A wide, loose sweep at a steady pace is more commonly associated with relaxation or happiness. When that tail comes higher, tighter, and more rigid, the dog is aroused, confident, and ready to engage with something in the environment. Tail position is only one piece of the picture. When

If your dog is exhibiting a high level of arousal/excitement on the walk, the first thing you need to assess is whether or not you are providing enough exercise to fulfill your dog both physically and mentally. In my experience, most people are not giving their dog enough exercise which leads to so many problems. Let's say you are giving your dog enough exercise but still dealing with an aroused and distracted dog. One thing you can do is intermittently just stop out of nowhere on the w

Excitement does not equal happiness. Think of excitement as arousal. It's quite common for humans to see a dog losing their mind with super high levels of arousal and say, "He's so happy!" I have to remind them, "he's highly aroused." That doesn't mean he is happy. Nurturing high levels of excitement/arousal constantly is very detrimental to a dogs overall well-being. Almost every client I work with here @themaddieranch has a dog with arousal/excitement issues. To be clear, there is nothing wron

Pre walk: ❌ Most people ENERGIZE their dog before a walk which causes their dog to be in a high state of arousal on a walk. Overtime this causes control issues and general anxiety outdoors ✅ Start with a sit at the door, and a calm pet before you proceed | K9 Academy

🐾 Not all reactivity comes from fear — some dogs are just too excited. Over-excitement reactivity happens when a dog’s arousal shoots through the roof the moment they see another dog. It’s not aggression — it’s “I want to say hi!” energy that turns into barking, lunging, and spinning. And both extremes can cause it 👇 ⚡ Too much off-leash chaos — constant dog park play teaches dogs to associate other dogs with high energy. 🚫 No social exposure — dogs left in the backyard with little enrichment

Excitement/Arousal is something that seems to be very misunderstood about dogs. Most of my clients dogs have some sort of a problem related to excitement. It's not that excitement is a bad thing. I allow my dogs to get VERY excited when we play and have fun. However, the rest of the time we practice calmness. The problem happens when people nurture excitement/tarousal too often and don't practice enough calmness. Pair that with not enough exercise and you have the perfect recipe for a dog whose

When a dog gets triggered to get aroused/excited by something, many humans make the error of getting excited WITH the dog. If you think about it, everything is calm, at least it should be in everyday life, and then something triggers the dog to to highly aroused, for instance the doorbell ringing. If you start also get excited and start yelling, you are just joining in that excited energy which will only make things worse. Your dog will take it as you are in agreement with the response of excite

Over-arousal is very topical in dog training and behaviour, with a gross misunderstanding of what it is, and how it is created. Over-arousal in dogs can be caused by several factors, including: 🐾 Lack of Physical Exercise: Insufficient physical activity can lead to pent-up energy and over-arousal. 🐾 Insufficient Mental Stimulation: Dogs need mental challenges to keep their minds engaged and balanced. 🐾 Inconsistent Training: Inconsistency in training can confuse dogs and contribute to heighte

Before your dog can offer true focus or engagement, they need to be in an optimal state of arousal. Just like us, if a dog’s arousal level is too low, they’ll struggle to stay attentive, and learning becomes difficult. On the other hand, if their arousal is too high, their brain is flooded with chemicals that impair impulse control and decision-making. High arousal can easily spill over into anxiety or frustration—neither of which support effective learning. It’s difficult to focus when you’re o

Excitement and flashy obedience does NOT equal a well behaved dog. Thor’s arousal is actually bad energy, that leads him to doing really stupid things. I have no problem with drive and excitement, but time and place. Most dogs have no idea how to control their drive, or how to think straight when the arousal increases. This is what we focus heavily on in training. Obedience is the easy part. State of mind is the main focus, and takes the most time. That’s why we don’t do short training programs

Does your dog struggle with over-arousal? Some dogs naturally find life very exciting - or overwhelming - which can lead to a whole array of behaviours, from jumping and spinning on lead, to zoomies, barking and even humping! Being flexible and having strategies that will help lower your dog’s arousal and bring them into a calmer headspace is a really important skill. Are you working with a highly aroused dog? Let’s clear up a common myth… 💡 Stillness creates calmness and movement creates arousal. 💡 Sounds logical, right? But it’s not always true. In fact, the opposite can often be the case! Movement—when done with purpose and clarity—can actually help a dog decompress, while forcing stillness without addressing the root cause can add frustration and make the problem worse. The key isn’t about stopping your dog but teaching them how to channel their energy.

An enormous issue in the dog world is people getting dogs who practice and nurture tons of excitement/arousal with the dog while NOT practicing impulse control and calmness. This leads to a dog who lives in a baseline state of arousal, which increases as the human continues to nurture arousal with no rules, boundaries, or limitations. Eventually, you have a dog who is regularly aroused, easily triggered to be aroused, who lacks impulse control and can not calm down. These are most of my clients.

Icorporating the "arousal up, arousal down" game with crate training for an anxious dog is a fantastic way to help the dog learn to manage their emotions and feel more comfortable in their crate. 1. Understanding the Game: The "arousal up, arousal down" game is designed to teach dogs to shift between moments of excitement and calmness. This is particularly helpful for anxious dogs, as it builds their ability to self-regulate and return to a relaxed state after stimulation. 2. Application with Cr

VIDEO REVIEW: Labrador Goes Crazy During Feeding Time! When a dog is this excited/aroused about food, people say, "he loves food." While the dog may love food, excitement/arousal is separate from whether they like or dislike something. Let me explain. My dogs LOVE food. That being said, they do not get highly aroused/excited in the presence of food because I conditioned them to be calm around food. Why? Because food is a primary reinforcer, which means it's a big deal to a dog. When using reinfo

I get it. Coming home to your dog who is very excited to see us can make us humans feel good. The problem with this big excited greeting is that you are likely setting your dog up for failure when guests come over. Many people come home and enter through the door in an excited way. They walk in, say, "HI (insert dog name), in a very excited way, where an excited dog gets even more excited, sometimes even whining and/or jumping. A ton of petting ensues, further reinforcing the extremely high stat

Arousal in your dog is the equivalent of humans being drunk. (They don’t make good decisions in this state!!) What everyone is doing is getting on the dog for explosive behavior. The lunging the barking the leash pulling. But really, it’s all arousal and it can be addressed well before it even started. What we mean by this is your walk isn’t just your walk. Your walk begins the second your dog leaves the crate, heads to the front door, and their energy throughout the process. If your dog is spin
