TODAY 147 years ago, George W. Coy established the world’s first commercial telephone exchange in New Haven. It was at the Boardman Building. The New Haven District Telephone Company put out its first list of subscribers in February and it included H.B. Bigelow. Yes, the same @bigelowtea company! This telephone company would eventually become Southern New England Telephone Company.
