The dazzling blanket octopus is a rare sight indeed! This pelagic species lives in the open sea, and facts are few & far between. In 2002, the first live male was discovered. We now know that this species has one of the largest gender size discrepancies (sexual size dimorphism) in the animal kingdom. Females grow up to 6.5 ft (2 meters), and the males only grow an estimated 2.4 cm long!! Even more mind boggling - the male blanket octopus weighs 40,000 times less than the female. 😮 Incredible fo

Tremoctopus is a genus of pelagic cephalopods, containing four species that occupy surface to mid-waters in subtropical and tropical oceans. They are commonly known as Blanket Octopuses, in reference to the long, transparent webs that connect the dorsal and dorsolateral arms of the adult females. Blanket octopuses are immune to the venomous Portuguese man o' war, whose tentacles the male and immature females rip off and use for offensive and defensive purposes. The Ocean's Veil: Blanket Octopus The female Blanket Octopus is a creature of the open ocean that rarely encounters the seafloor. To appear larger to predators, she unfurls a spectacular, cape-like membrane connecting her dorsal arms. This footage captures the ethereal, almost non-physical quality of this webbing, showing the complex hydrodynamics as the iridescent tissue flows and ripples in the currents of the deep sea. #nature #naturelovers #animals #animallover #viralreelschallenge | Dailydo

Female blanket octopuses, unlike their male counterparts, are much larger and heavier than their male counterparts. They can measure up to 4 feet in length and weigh up to 15 pounds, while males usually measure only a few inches and are relatively weightless. The larger size of the female is thought to be due to her need to carry a large number of eggs in her mantle cavity. In addition, the female blanket octopus has eight arms that are more muscular than those of the male, allowing her to more
