Kavan pitched 31.2 innings in six games without allowing a single earned run throughout the tournament. Those numbers earned her the WCWS Most Outstanding Player.

Freshman Cambria Salmon did a fine job in her first two innings in relief of starter Mac Morgan — her wicked changeup is something to behold — but the youngster ran into trouble in the fateful fifth inning of a scoreless game. White remained planted in the dugout with Kavan at the ready, even after Salmon loaded the bases with a two-out walk.
