Cal Quantrill saw an opportunity and took it. That’s essentially what went into the right-handed pitcher’s decision to sign a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Miami Marlins on Wednesday as the team began spring training at the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium complex in Jupiter.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill and the Miami Marlins have agreed to a $3.5 million, one-year contract. Quantrill can earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses.

Cal Quantrill got non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies in November, opening the door for the Miami Marlins to sign the veteran pitcher at the start of spring training.
