The Vancouver Canucks this past Friday announced they had signed goaltender Kevin Lankinen to a new five-year extension that carries a $4.5 million cap hit. Vancouver signed Lankinen just before the regular season started as there was some uncertainty surrounding Thatcher Demko and the injury that plagued him during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Demko’s placement on the IR will likely be made retroactive to Feb. 8. He left the Canucks’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs after only 10 minutes due to a lower-body injury.

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko will not join the team on their upcoming five-game road trip due to a lower-body injury suffered in a game
The math isn’t daunting for the Vancouver Canucks to secure an NHL playoff position. However, getting back to the big dance for the second consecutive season means there must be key additions — notably Quinn Hughes and Thatcher Demko returning from injury — and no further subtractions to ensure they won’t have to go on a crazy run in 27 remaining regular-season games.
