Tropical Storm Erin is on track to become the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2025 season. The storm developed from a tropical wave as it spun west off the western coast of Africa, the National Hurricane Center in Miami announced on Monday, Aug. 11.

While some forecasts show Erin moving closer to the U.S., there’s no immediate threat to New York at this time. The storm is expected to strengthen quickly, with warm Atlantic waters providing fuel. August and September are the peak of hurricane season, making preparedness especially important.
