President Donald Trump said Canada’s and Mexico’s pledges to boost border security to stop illegal drugs were insufficient to keep his tariffs on hold. President Donald Trump said Sunday that Mexico’s and Canada’s actions to stave off his steep tariffs are not sufficient.

In 1965, the Canada–United States Automotive Products Agreement was enacted, a precursor to NAFTA that removed tariffs between the two countries. This led to increased auto manufacturing in Canada and more jobs. The agreement was abolished in 2001, but by then NAFTA had more or less superseded it.

President Trump imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada starting Saturday, as well as an additional 10% tariff on imports from China. However, Mr. Trump on Monday said he was pausing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days after both countries agreed to direct additional resources to their borders.
