Seven seasons later, Lamar Jackson has officially made it. We’re talking, of course, about the annual quarterback tiers by The Athletic’s Mike Sando, which for the first time has Jackson ranked in Tier 1.

Jackson Holliday rapped a two-out, run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Baltimore Orioles found just enough late-game offense to defeat the visiting Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer in the second inning, Jackson Merrill connected in the eighth for insurance, and the San Diego Padres beat the struggling San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Tuesday night.

When Jackson Merrill is squaring up balls as he has of late and for longer than the numbers bear out, it doesn’t matter where he hits in the lineup. Probably doesn’t matter anyway, but Padres manager Mike Shildt at least feels comfortable returning his 22-year-old center fielder to the cleanup spot for Wednesday’s series finale against the Giants.
