California Democrats introduced a legislative package to call a special election in November to redraw the state's congressional districts to counter GOP efforts in other states.
The new, partisan maps come on the heels of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s launch of California’s redistricting campaign on Thursday, an effort he touted as meant to favor Democrats in California in the upcoming midterm elections as a counter to similar efforts in Republican-led states elsewhere in the country.
California Democrats unveiled a new congressional map that could give them five more seats, countering GOP redistricting in Texas and reshaping House control.
This map is not final and lawmakers could tweak it further before deciding to move ahead. Any changes to the congressional district maps would require an amendment to the state Constitution and would need to be approved by two-thirds of the Assembly and state Senate chambers - though both chambers hold such supermajorities.
The battle for seats could soon be a battle on the ballot as Assembly democrats in California continue to push redistricting efforts in the state.
