Waymo has gotten the green light from New York City to start testing autonomous vehicles on its streets.

Waymo is largely considered the gold standard for autonomous ride-share services, offering computer-piloted -rides in five of the largest cities in the U.S—and, generally speaking, doing so in a reliable and safe manner. Now, the Mountain View, California-based company is one step closer to expanding into its biggest city yet: New York, New York.

The Department of Transportation issued a permit on Friday allowing the company, which is owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, to test out eight self-driving cars with a driver in the vehicle. The pilot period is expected to last through September, but in a release the city said the company can renew its permit.
