On Friday, the New York Mets signed infielder Nick Madrigal to a major-league deal, according to The New York Post’s Joel Sherman. Madrigal conceivably fills the spot occupied by Jose Iglesias last season as a backup at second base and third base.

As of today, utility infielder and unlikely pop star Jose Iglesias is still on the free-agent market. The lack of a market for Iglesias is somewhat perplexing, especially after hitting .337 through 270 at-bats as a bench piece with the New York Mets last season.

The New York Mets have their sights set on a huge season after signing major free-agent prize Juan Soto in the offseason. New York made it to the National League Championship Series last year, but the team fell to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
