The U.K. government has announced plans to dismantle the remains of London’s Grenfell Tower. The announcement on Friday came almost eight years after the deadliest fire in Britain since World War II swept through the high-rise apartment building that killed 72 people.

Survivors and bereaved families’ groups said Britain’s deputy prime minister had told them that the site of the 2017 catastrophe would be dismantled.

The British government said Friday the Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died in a west London 2017 fire, will be taken down. A 6-year investigation found it was avoidable and caused by incompetence, dishonesty and greed.
