Purdue’s Braden Smith was named the Big Ten player of the year and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo coach of the year by both the league’s coaches and the media in voting coordinated by the conference.

Even without Zach Edey, Braden Smith flourished as a junior and was recognized as the best player in the Big Ten.

Michigan State’s Tom Izzo was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the fourth time, among the other conference awards announced Tuesday.

UCLA withstood every challenge, rallying for an improbable victory over USC to win the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament.

Lauren Betts scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half Sunday and No. 4 UCLA allowed only four baskets over the final 12 minutes as the Bruins rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat No. 2 USC 72-67 in the Big Ten tournament championship game.

But UCLA and USC women’s basketball both could, and probably should, wind up with No. 1 regional seeds when the NCAA field is announced.
