The first seven are commonly referred to as the Seven Sister States, while Sikkim, which became part of the North Eastern Council in 2002, is often called the Brother. The region spans a total area of approximately 262,179 km², accounting for 7.97% of India's total land area, and has a population of over 45 million people, according to the most recent estimates.
