Took us around an hour to walk to the castle and back. It’s a lovely walk and worth doing. It is a bit of an incline most of the way to the castle but there are benches to rest up at on the way there…Full review by smd2009

This was probably one of the easiest trailheads to locate, and the path was well marked and a pleasure to follow. Although one obviously climbs in elevation, the path winds back and forth for an eas…Full review by geismom

Hi, Trying to plan our route round the north coast 500 so your help would be appreciated! How long did it take you to walk up to Castle Varrich? From wherever you can park really.

I would agree, around 45 mins to an hour. We stopped to take photos etc on the way. A lovely walk, with a steep bit at the top. A little tricky at the last bit by the castle. However, it is passable, if you take care (I have a knee injury and managed it, if a little slower than the rest!) Well worth the effort when you get up to the castle, amazing views.
My Boyfriend and I are travelling to Scotland in July. He is a MacKay and we would love to be able to see Castle Varrich where Clan MacKay has sat, but I have no clue on how to get there. We have a unlimited Train/Bus/Ferry pass and I figured that we can get there via one of these ways from Inverness. Can someone please help me out, it will be greatly appreciated :)

We were staying in Tongue for 2 nights while we did the North Coast 500 trip which we did by car. Personally I wouldn't make a special trip to see Castle Varrich because it is little more than a watchtower and I don't know about public transport but even if you could get it there it would take a long time. This is a very beautiful but very remote part of Scotland.
